The Summer Art Exhibition is about story telling. Summer is a great time to be part of stories from your travels, family outings, neighborhood get togethers. Have fun, tell a story with your art and share it in the Summer Art Show. All media are welcome.

Jurors

Ann Baldwin -

Ann Baldwin is an internationally known mixed media collage artist. She conducts workshops in abstract painting, mixed media collage, and art critique at art centers across the USA and Canada. She also writes on the business of art.

Ann is the featured artist in the Creative Catalyst Productions art instruction DVD, Telling Stories with Collage & Paint

Juror Comments

All jurors begin by commenting how hard it was to make a choice and this was certainly true here. I have never judged an online show before. The small size of the images on my computer screen made it doubly difficult. That and the fact that texture wasn't always easy to evaluate. It only took me one pass through all the images to choose Veronica Garcia-Huidobro's piece as Best of Show. It fit the theme perfectly and I looked at the painting for a long time, appreciating every inch. Many of the pieces which were submitted didn't fit the theme, I felt. Beautiful paintings of leaves, flowers, and fruit didn't carry a narrative, which was what I was really hoping for. The story didn't have to be complicated - 'Island Dreaming' by Marilyn Brandenburger is simple but full of meaning, some of which can be supplied by the viewer. Obviously, as a collage artist myself, I am drawn to collage work. However, it is important that the collage isn't just a random collection of 'stuff' or that the message isn't spelled out too obviously in words. Georgia Mason's work has the kind of subtlety of detail that I really admire.It is very difficult to create a painting of people which comes alive. Too often the poses look contrived or too predictable. I absolutely fell in love with Kathy Jurek's 'Candy Girls'. If I were a realistic painter, that's the kind of piece I'd like to be able to create. Maybe that's why I've turned to photography in recent years.I'd like to point out that, although I did look at some of the artists' work on their personal websites, this was only AFTER I'd made my decisions. I didn't want to be influenced by anything they'd done before. It was the piece itself which mattered. - Ann Baldwin -
