Judging Criteria: There really has to be some kind of emotional connection. The Artist has to “grab” me and hold me. This connection some describe as content, the idea, the reason for creating the work in the first place. It shows through, or should. Then comes the Design…how does the Artist use the elements of design; line, shape, texture, value, direction, space and color, then apply the principals of design; unity, harmony, contrast/conflict, rhythm, repetition. variation, balance, dominance/emphasis and gradation in an arrangement that engages the viewer? Finally, do the techniques employed help the Artist solve their own visual problems, and if so, how successfully? Some Artists do a better job with these problems than others. The goal is to keep creating, keep pushing, and keep making the visual problems you create for your self to solve harder each time. Keep at it. It is the journey that is the fun part!
