"Clementines"

Description:

Like droplets of amber, "Clementines" was painted from life, rather than my usual use of photographic references. To emphasize the beautiful orange glow of the little citruses I placed them on an aqua cloth allowing the fruit to really "pop". We're surrounded by little "jewels" in nature and many of my recent paintings have taken a closely cropped view of such beauties. With "Clementines", their form, but particularly their vibrant color is what really appealed to me.

Juror Comments:

What a gutsy composition! The simplicity of the arrangement adds to its success. The glowing color of the clementines is echoed (but more subtly) in the background and in the fabric. The blues just enhance and unify the composition. The thin blue shadow on the right “makes” the balance.
