Juror Statement

I’ve had several opportunities to judge art shows. It’s never easy. This is the first time I’ve judged a show on the Internet. It still wasn’t easy. I’m not sure all the paintings were shown to their best advantage because the visual impact is just not the same online as it is in person. However, that being said, I enjoyed the experience, and I had the pleasure of viewing some exceptional works of art. It’s always an honor to be asked to judge a show and I want to give a great big thank you to the folks at Creative Catalyst for this opportunity to view your art. There was a lot of really fine art submitted. Congratulations to all of you who submitted your art and congratulations to the winners. Thank you all for your participation.

First Place Winner
Summer Streams

Title: Summer Streams
Artist: Barb Lincoln
Dimensions: 18.5" x 26"
Media: Watercolor
Website:

Juror's Comments

Artist Barb Lincoln’s “Summer Streams” is a well thought-out watercolor. Not only does a babbling brook have universal appeal, the transparent washes of this watercolor and the brushwork are marvelous, also. The colors she uses, the composition, and the atmosphere she created are excellent. A strong center of interest is present and the eye moves through this painting with ease. This painting has it all. Congratulations to Barb Lincoln for a terrific painting.

Second Place Winner
Venice Canal

Title: Venice Canal
Artist: Rosa Vera
Dimensions:  18" x 24"
Media: acrylic
Website:  www.rosavera.com

Juror's Comments

It was the fine use of color that attracted me to this painting, and Rosa Vera’s excellent use of light. This is a painting within a painting – the dark buildings on either side of the canal acts as a secondary border narrowing the viewers focus to the center of interest and all that lush color. The water reflections are very believable and add a lot of interest to the overall art. Good job, Rosa!

Third Place Winner

Artist Bruce Burkholder

Title: Down The Road In Western Kansas
Artist: Bruce Burkholder
Dimensions: 12" x 40"
Media: Oil-Alkyd
Website:

Juror's Comments

Bruce Burkholder is very accomplished with his color “green” and use of texture. I enjoyed the way the artist took a relatively simple scene and created a painting with a lot to see. The long, hard, straight line of the horizon is complemented by all the complex shapes in the mid-ground and foreground. The simple cloudless sky forces the eye to explore the foreground where the road then leads your eye to the area of strongest light in the distance that creates a center of interest for the viewers eye to rest. A very enjoyable painting, Bruce, congratulations!

Honorable Mentions

I chose these paintings because they each have great appeal in their color and composition. I always look for a strong center of interest, but a well designed painting with great color and texture will also attract my attention. These paintings were executed well! Congratulations.
