Lesley Riley (continued)
Lesley Riley's artist statement:
My Art is about the Magic of Making Art... the how, the why, the what, even the where has unending fascination for me. My work reflects my life. My family is always present in my art. In the irregularity of my stitches when my five year old is next to me bouncing in time to Mozart. In the spontaneity of a stolen moment to adjust a composition. In the unexpected color combinations I find after the girls have had a go at my fabric stash.
Art is a way of life in our house. I can teach my children now, what it took me over 40 years to discover ~ that creating, making art, is a natural, free-flowing process that requires no special time, no secluded space, no Masters of Fine Art.
There's magic in art. Making art makes us happy. Creating fulfills the eternal longing of the soul. Our soul craves expression. Art is the soul made visible. I create and show my art so that others can get to know the real me. Through my art I hope to inspire others and share the magic.
From Lesley's Web Site:
So, naturally, you want to see my art.
My creations. My soul made visible. Everyone is curious to see what others have
created to see if they can find any meaning in it for themselves. Leo Tolstoy
said that "Art is a microscope which the artist fixes on the secrets of
his soul and shows to other people these secrets which are common to all."
My art takes many forms: quilts, dolls, collages and mixed media... and tomorrow,
I may find another way to express myself. I also love to create with words.
I love their graphic quality as well as the images and memories they conjure
up.
FRAGMENTS - My Fragment series came about as a result of having lots of ideas and little time.
I started creating small fiber collages one frozen January day when the power
was out. Each one inspired another until I had a stack of over 25. They came
fast and easy. The daylight faded away but the creative fire never did. I have
been creating Fragments for over 2 years, and I am still amazed by the beauty
of each one and the joy it brings me. FRAGMENT

QUILTS
- After creating so many little Fragments, I found the courage to work larger.
I was a quilter back in the 1970's and made many traditional quilts. But
this is a new century and now my quilts are anything but traditional. My 2003
JOURNAL QUILTS are now online. This was a project that began
on the QUILTART online
list and debuted at the 2002 International Quilt Festival in Houston, TX.
DOLLS
- I began designing and making dolls in 1995. When I wondered where to begin,
I remembered the timeworn advice to writers, "Write about what you know,"
so I created what I knew...children. This Gallery shows a sampling of my work
over the years. I am currently working on a new series which is completely different
from my pervious work. The work is different because now I know a lot more about
myself. Creating does that for you....Fragment
