Ratindra Das: Artist Statement
"An artist lives by his wits. Like most artists I enjoy, I struggle and I exult. There is no better reason to paint than just for the love of it. I learn every day and every time I paint whether in studio or outdoors. I learn from nature, from experiments and failures and from my peers.
"I love watercolor because of its dynamic qualities- it moves! That's watercolor's inherent characteristic. Often I make preparatory sketches, which are further developed into paintings. I have thousands of sketches - enough to paint for next three hundred years! Over the years I have relied less and less on photographs. Sketches seem to have more emotional and direct impact on my paintings. I love colors and use them intuitively rather than relying on what’s out there. It's the fruit of life!"

Comments of students from recent Ratindra Das workshops
"...approach is very good, very supportive. He is encouraging and very good for a painter as I am, young in painting." —Betty Bloomquist, Grand Forks, ND
"Learned essential truths- not rules." —Donna Chalimonczyk, Moorhead, MN
"I greatly value the challenges you presented to each member personally. It is fun to see so many new ways of doing things and try them. I feel enriched." —Ellen Diedrich, Fargo, ND
"Thoroughly enjoyed this workshop! Appreciated your easygoing demeanor, your sense of humor and "words of wisdom". —Diane Crawford, Fargo, ND
"Your mixture of teaching with philosophical sayings and tenets really effective. Your relaxed, yet very thoughtful teaching statements created a non-threatening atmosphere and enhanced my learning immensely. You are a genuine, sincere teacher who has a gift for giving to others."
"... You did light the fire for me and I am painting now more than ever." —Barbara Nagle, Fargo, ND
"You shared practical wisdom. You gave me a workable approach to the terrifying landscape. My work needs freeing from the photo and stronger design base which the attention to ‘shape’ should help provide" —V. Helweg, Fargo, ND
"I have had instructions from four very fine, renowned workshop instructors. I value each experience. I do think, however, that I was more inspired, more stimulated by this workshop than any other" —Ron Anderson, Wayzata, MN
"I learned to juice-up my colors. You validated the information I taught my junior
high students (e.g., definition of a line- it’s man-made; shapes, and values)." —Jacqueline
Anderson, Moorhead, MN.
"Thank you for your patience. I am glad I had a chance to take your class." —Carolyn Heintz., Pelican Rapids, MN
"Nice outline- informal but built on concepts given each day. Varied the methods, very encouraging! Nice critique technique. Accommodated variety of skill and experience levels without intimidation to any. Thank you for opening up my right brain skills." —B. B. Bender, St. Louis Park, MN
"Your approach to painting is very non-intimidating and makes me want to get
at it." —Carolyn Kimbell, Baileys Harbor, WI
"Excellent class. I took the spring workshop too! This one was different-learned a lot of basics as well as new things. Teacher worked well with differing personalities and abilities." —Mary Anderson, Fish Creek, WI
"Learned more than I hoped to." —Stacey Street, Lake Bluff, IL
"Anytime you have another workshop-let me know. I would love to attend another. I felt that I was able to see improvement in my painting technique over the two-day workshop." —Christina Dix, Oshkosh, WI
"..I think it’s good to put to use the ideas you acquire from the teacher into your own style. I loved the workshop and got a lot out of it. Thanks. I got a lot out of your "correct" method of using the acetate." —Grace Haverty, Artist and teacher, Scottsdale, AZ
"I totally enjoyed the experience and picked up a lot of things I can incorporate into my work in the future. Especially your approach to the use of color and the simplification of source materials.....I felt the demonstrations were excellent....the size of the group was good for individual attention and would consider attending future ones when available." —Bill Baykan, Artist and Graphic Designer, Woodridge, IL.
"I particularly liked the fact that you spent time explaining your value sketch. It was very informative to find out how to take a not-so perfect photo and turn it into a painting. I find that very difficult." —Sarah Ettinger., Naperville.IL
"I appreciate the fact that we used our own photos- also the use of the acetate to critique our painting....It was a very fine workshop." —Violet Simmel.
"Value sketches came alive! As a beginner I found the class very instructive and your teaching style supportive and encouraging." —Sarah Stine, Mc Henry, IL.
"Gave me a good understanding of using more color-design in a less structured way. Really have enjoyed and learned from the workshop. It was fun!!" —Jean Fraher.
"...You were able to give us so much information and also helped to alleviate some of the fear of using strong colors when beginning a painting. It was fun!" —Mike Gross.
"It was different than most workshops I've taken, but very worthwhile. Enriched my art appreciation." —Irene Ayres.
"I love the quotes! ...the easy going atmosphere... encourages experimentation, frees up the artist. Process emphasized over product is refreshing. This workshop is just what I needed to get started painting this summer." —Rob Williams, Crystal Lake, IL.
"I found this workshop very helpful, it gives me new ways of looking at the medium and wanting to continue experimenting with it." —Elizabeth Steinvorth, Costa Rica
"The entire workshop was great. I like having that opening exercise where we
start painting right away. The ‘follow along’ demos were of big help...
I hope to have another workshop with you." —Tom Poole, Bowling Green, KY.
"The most beneficial part of your presentation (demos) was the time spent on "thinking
out loud" - while each painting evolved. It was very useful to listen in on
your process of paint, assess, paint, assess." —Laura Jeske, Valparaiso,
