Taylor Ikin
Taylor Ikin is a respected and much sought-after
watercolor artist who captures the spirit of the Florida landscape. She frequently
paints images of The Everglades, rivers and backwaters in order to draw attention
to the 'old Florida' which is constantly being threatened by progress
and extensive development. To quote Ikin, "My goal is to draw the viewer
into the image buy using large brushes, loaded with paint… working to
create textures that lead the eye on an unsuspecting journey throughout the
work."
Shapes and colors appear to be isolated, but as one steps back from the painting,
the eye weaves everything together and the image comes to life. Ikin has an
energetic brush stroke which dances across the paper and bounces off the wet
surface, creating vibrant, fluid paintings.
A unique characteristic of Taylor Ikin’s process is use of traditional
watercolor media applied to a synthetic painting surface called YUPO. "Since
no trees are required in the processing of YUPO, the use of this innovative
material further supports my interest in preservation and conservation," says
Taylor.
After living 17 years in the West Indies, Ikin returned to Tampa and has been exhibited in the Gasparilla Sidewalk Art Show and Southeastern Watercolor VI. She is a board member and past president of the Florida
Watercolor Society and holds membership in The
Florida Suncoast Watercolor Society, Tallahassee
Watercolor Society, the Southern
Watercolor Society and The Florida Artist Group
Taylor is a faculty member of the Gulf
Coast Museum of Art in Largo, Florida and is on the board of the Arts Council of Hillsborough County. A recent recipient of a position in the Hillsborough County Public Art Program, as well as a participant in the Tampa International Airport Exhibit, she keeps involved in her community and is a part of several projects which further the impact of arts in the Tampa Bay area.
Taylor Ikin’s watercolor artwork has been published in numerous periodicals and books, including The American Artist, The
Artist’s Magazine, Liat Islander, Southern Living, The Artistic Touch 3, The Works and Impressions of 110 Great American Artists, and Mary
Todd Beam’s book, Celebrating the Creative Artist Within. Her paintings are featured in a number of important corporate and private collections in the United States, Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Ireland, Spain, Switzerland, the Caribbean, Wales and The Vatican.
