This watercolor instruction video is appropriate for watercolor artists at any skill level, beginning to advanced — for anyone who wants to gain a deeper understanding of the creative process of painting successful watercolors.

In this Artist’s Video Production 1986 film, you join Barbara Neches in her home studio and watch as she begins two paintings from scratch, and works on two painting previously started. Barbara’s process is to work on a variety of paintings in a single day, finishing some and leaving others for another day. Her work is not literal but rather a collection of shapes and colors that give the feeling of a place or thing. Some are very hard edge while others are soft edge, a result of her signature wet into wet technique. She is very design oriented. For most of her work she uses large flat brushes. She also masks areas with tape and uses contact paper stencils when she lifts color. You hear Barbara’s voice over explaining some of her process and thinking as she works. At the end of the film, each painting comes on screen as she analysis their design and discusses her next step. The film is 48 minutes in length.

Over all, viewing the Nechis DVD is a valuable experience. Barbara represents a refreshing way to approach a painting.
