You will be inspired by Steven Quiller's enthusiasm about the endless possibilities of acrylics as watermedia to create dazzling, luminous works of art.
Acrylic as Water Media
Stephen Quiller, a master of water media, considers acrylics the most versatile of any painting medium. Fully recognizing that the paint has its own unique traits and qualities he encourages the viewer to give it an open-minded try! He demonstrates how acrylics work on different surfaces, under various circumstances and qualifying situations. To paraphrase Quiller, working with acrylic is an adventure. The paint can be wet, juicy, soft, runny, thick and creamy, sculptural, buttery like finger paint, transparent, translucent, or close to opaque... forcing the artist to be actively involved in paying attention to "what the paint wants to do."
Quiller uses a glass palette and luminous intense colors. He demonstrates the variety of thickness and texture of the paint used with varying amounts of water and the endless possibilities this offers. Quiller also addresses issues concerning acrylics limitations and advantages connected to it very fast-drying properties.
Separate demonstrations include (but not limited to) a mountain cabin handled similar to traditional watercolor paints, a landscape with mountain and lake and the way to use the paint as a translucent medium. At least four other approaches are shown.
Quiller's pleasure in acrylic paints is openly discussed as he walks through this workshop. Painting one of his favorite outdoor subjects - The Rancho Church - Quiller establishes a composition. His finished reflects his interest in the play of light and perspective on any given day. The sunshine in the painting glows.
Attention to care of brushes, tools and palette surfaces are discussed and emphasis on getting to know what this type of medium can do under a variety of demands.
Stephen Quiller continually finds the fast drying qualities of acrylics exciting and capitalizes on that fact with a variety of glazes to create depth and interesting color combinations. He feels that acrylic gives the artist a new freedom to ignore old “rules”. Quiller generates excitement about the possibilities of Acrylic as Water.
