Using transparent watercolor and opaque gouache together expands the possibilities of both, but particularly by making watercolor appear even more transparent by contrast. Stephen Quiller explores and demonstrates these effects by using an array of application techniques, then steps outside to create an on-site reference painting of a beaver pond. He uses this painting to capture ideas and impressions, which he brings back into the studio to use as inspiration for a larger painting.

During the process of building this painting, Stephen explains and demonstrates palette arrangement, color shifts while drying, lifting color, and how to use the white of the paper to create sparkle and luminosity. He introduces flat and round brushwork, wet-on-wet painting, wet-on-dry/control wash, and dry-on-dry techniques.
