Acrylic Abstract Painting: The Evolving Image

Virginia Cobb develops three abstract paintings, each started by emphasizing a different design element: line, shape, texture. In the first half of her process she builds a rich under structure. She creates, destroys, and creates again unpredictable shapes, textures and color combinations. In doing so she establishes multiple layers of depth and mystery. Her final process is a rational analysis that evaluates color temperature, edges, shapes and balance. She applies the concepts of linkage, depth, rhythm and harmony to an amazing result.

In the process, you see Virginia’s bold and inventive handling of the medium while ’listening in‘ on her thought process and self talk as she works her way through a maze of options. Her daring solutions reflect a lifetime of experimentation and experience. The result is three very different paintings that have in common strength, beauty and mystery.

Virginia's painting process is open ended and designed for artistic growth. She intentionally creates ‘problems’, in part to challenge herself to rise to a higher creative lever in pursuit of elegant design solutions. She continually pushes the envelope.

Although you see plenty of wonderful techniques and virtuoso handling of the medium, the main thrust of this workshop is about daring, trust, and a willingness to fail in the pursuit of learning and artistic growth. The DVD includes a 37 minute interview.
